What will cause the agitator on my g.e. washer to stop turning?

One, try tightening the knob on the top of the agitator. Sometimes, this will come loose.

If that doesn't seem to help, then my next guess is the belt underneath.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can more than likely fix this yourself. If not, you will need to contact a repairman.

Hope this helps. What will cause the agitator on my g.e. washer to stop turning?
Most likely the belt to the agitator has either broken or is worn. You also may wish to check the motor to the belt as well. What will cause the agitator on my g.e. washer to stop turning?
It could be as simple as a belt. Or worse, it could be a frozen transmission. I had to deal with one of those once. It had frozen up and leaked tranny grease all over the floor underneath the washer. Not fun to clean up!

I hope it's just the belt. Much cheaper.
Is it moving at all, just not moving back and forth? If that's the case, it mikght be what they refer to as ';dog-ears'; on the top of the agitator. They act kind of like a rachet to work the agitator right. If they are broke, they are easy to replace. Go to ';repairclinic.com';, put in your make and model, and they can help you with this or other solutions.
The motor is malfunctioning happened to mine once had to have it fixed. find someone you know to fix it can cost a bit to have repair guy come out.
One possibility is a loose or broken belt. They are similar to the belts you find on a car engine and wear out over time or can be just plain defective.
there is a drive belt underneath the washer that may have broken.

If thats the case, a ser vice person, will charge $10.00 or more to replace it. That is before he writes up the service bill.
